Review by Christopher G. Kendall As outlined in the preface of this volume, this is intended as a basic guide for the coal even seismic lines and discussion of the instrumentation needed to make geophysical analyses of coals. It is a handy book that's short and to the point. It is a little cursory because it is a handbook. Nevertheless, it File Size: 61KB. The present study aimed to characterize the coal in the area under study through chemical composition utilizing the parameters through proximate and ultimate analyses. The analytical evaluation of properties such as moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon, and ash forms the proximate analysis. In the present study the moisture content in the coals samples ranges between and wt%.

The Wasatch Plateau, the Book Cliffs, and the Emery coal fields contained average analyses which rank the coal as high volatile B bituminous. However, an occasional coal bed within these coal fields may only rank as high volatile C bituminous. The Coalville coal field contains coals which rank from subbituminous A to high volatile C bituminous. Coal is valued for its energy content and since the s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. COAL STUDIES METHANE CONTENT OF UTAH COALS by H. DoeUing, A. Smith, and F. Davis OBSERVATIONS ON THE SUNNYSIDE COAL ZONE by H. DoeUing, A. Smith, F. Nine high-volatile bituminous Utah coals were carbonized singly and in blends with low- and medium-volatile bituminous coals.

Of the nine coals, two are in commercial use as the base coals in blends that produce industrially acceptable metallurgical coke, while seven are regarded as weakly coking and are not used commercially in coking blends. The most immature coals, soft brown coals, cannot be distinguished chemically from mature peats.

Some mature lignites, for example, in Pakistan, Borneo, and Utah, possess coking properties. The coke from the ring-roll briquettes, obtained as slightly shrunken replicas of the uncarbonized briquettes, is hard and of high calorific value.
